SMUDGE OFF (or SMUDGING 101
Smudging - a centuries old ceremonial ritual to energetically cleanse a space to invite positive energy. When burned, the smoke of natural plants are said to rid negative energy, cleanse your soul, banish spirits, invite protection, rid bacteria and more. Do not rush the smudging ritual, set aside time to calm your heart, practice mindfulness and contemplate your intention. If it feels ok to you, it may be helpful to chant a mantra or a prayer. I love the Buddhist mantra “Om mani padme hum”, the mantra of compassion.
Tips to use: Burn tip for a few seconds or until you get a good smoke going. a feather is useful to fan the ember. An abalone shell has long been used to catch any ashes.
Holding at one end, the other on a 45 degree angle, move clockwise starting from your front door. This is called “circumambulation”. Wave the smoke - in a well ventilated area, over yourself, an object, car, space, or person. never leave unattended. Trace doorways, windows corners, wardrobes with the smudging smolder to rid negativity from being present or entering, or simply take a deep breath and let these natural tools take over. Never blow on the smudge wand, yet fan the sage to create a nice even ember. Keep the string in tact and re-tie if necessary. Use with intention and purpose for best results, and enjoy.
